The School of Contemporary Music offers students a specialised music program, which has a focus on Jazz. The program was established to encourage young music talent and raise the profile of music in the community.
This well-rounded unique program offers each year level a balanced swing band that enables the students to perform together during class time. Music making is a performance art and at Como we firmly believe that students learn musical concepts more effectively by performing on their instruments.
The course gives a thorough grounding for entry into Jazz and Contemporary music studies at the Conservatorium of Music (WAAPA) and at the University of Western Australia.
For students with a more industry oriented focus the program enables senior students to gain a nationally recognised qualification (Certificate II in Music Industry) – enabling them to work in the music industry or continue their studies at a tertiary level.
Graduates from the program are currently working and studying in high profile arts organisations.
The specially selected students of the Music Academy are taught by our highly qualified staff, all with an extensive background in education and music performance.
The College also enjoys the support of the School of Instrumental Music thus engaging the services of specialist instrumental teachers who offer free tuition for most instruments. Regular master classes are also conducted with some of Western Australia’s most prominent professional music educators and performers.
Ensemble performance is an integral part of the music experience at Como. Students participate in Junior, Intermediate and Senior Concert Bands, Swing Bands, Stage Band, Chamber Ensembles and Vocal Ensembles.
Working hard as a part of a disciplined team, the students perform music in a range of styles, make rewarding friendships, contribute to community performances and perform in local, state, national and international festivals. As a result the program has a reputation in Western Australia for excellence in performance.
The Specialist Music Program is designed for students who can demonstrate behaviours that reflect a strong work ethic, a willingness to learn new skills and teamwork. Music demands excellent co-operation and adherence to complex strategies and tactics and therefore appropriate behaviour is expected at all times.
The Contemporary Jazz program requires students to manage their study program effectively. The program supports academic success as a priority and therefore a position in the Contemporary Jazz program is only granted if the student is committed to their academic education.
An audition process will be used to assess music ability. It is only possible to achieve high standards if students are committed to the program. Attendance at rehearsals, lessons, concerts and performances, as well as a positive attitude to regular practice and other areas of their academic program is a requirement. Students accepting a position in the program are expected to perform in music ensembles to the end of Year 12.
Specialist Program applications close during Term 2 and auditions will follow. Contemporary Jazz Application form and Expression of Interest form should be forwarded with all supporting documentation to the Enrolments Officer. Exceptional circumstances may allow for late applications and midyear enrolment opportunities.
For enrolment information and application closing dates please visit the Enrolments page or contact the College on 9365 2000.
