Como Secondary College
The EMITS program offers students of above average ability in the mathematics, science, and technology fields an exciting and challenging program of learning to build a solid knowledge and skills base for further University studies.
Successful applicants to the College’s EMITS program enjoy fast-paced and enriched studies of science, mathematics, and information technology and are provided with resources and encouragement to apply their knowledge and skills. The College staff utilise research-based best practice to meet the needs of these talented students. The curriculum is specially designed to enrich and challenge students and is linked with Curtin University to provide additional enrichment opportunities. These activities include incursions and excursions as well as science, mathematics, and computing competitions.
EMITS is a program requiring a four year commitment (Years 7–10), to fully develop students as self-directed learners with exceptional organisational, time-management, decision-making, and self-evaluative skills.
All students enrolled in the EMITS program who successfully complete their course requirements over four years, receive a nationally accredited Certificate II in Information Technology.

The EMITS Student
Students who apply for this highly regarded course need to be co-operative and practical in in their approach to science and technology learning.
Student selection for the program is based on a portfolio of supporting evidence, in particular, of any scientific endeavours and achievements as well as school reports and references. Further examples may also include merit certificates, and projects or models created.
Every prospective EMITS student is required to sit an entrance test which assesses the student’s ability in mathematics, science, and information technology.
Beyond the College
Successful applicants to the program have their in-school learning further extended with experiences which are designed to supplement and extend their skills and knowledge.
These include a variety of compulsory, well-structured excursions as well as competitions in the mathematics, engineering, computing, science, and information technology fields. EMITS students may also have the opportunity to present projects at international student fairs and in the past have participated in, and excelled at, state and interstate robotics competitions. In recent years, past EMITS students have also achieved success in national and international Informatics Olympiads.
An Elite Group
Since 2007 Como Secondary College has had in excess of 50 students achieve a TER (ATAR) of 95 or higher and over 60% of these students have gone through the EMITS program.

Certificates of Distinction
In addition four students have been awarded Certificates of Distinction for achieving in the top 0.5% in WACE exams:

2013 – L Elson Certificate of Distinction in Mathematics and Mathematics Specialist
2013 – M Nejatian Certificate of Distinction in Human Biology
It is essential students can demonstrate behaviours that reflect a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn new skills. Students are expected to remain in the program until Year 10. Practical testing as well as school reports and portfolios will be used to assess suitability.
Specialist Program applications close during Term 2 and testing will follow. EMITS Application form and Expression of Interest form should be forwarded with all supporting documentation to the Enrolments Officer. Exceptional circumstances may allow for late applications and midyear enrolment opportunities.
